Freshdesk vs Zendesk (2026): Pricing, AI Costs and Which One Fits Your Business
By Ravinder Cheema, Clicks Dynasty · Prices checked September 2026 · About 8 minutes to read
Freshdesk and Zendesk are the two help desks most small and mid-sized businesses compare first. On paper their entry prices now look almost identical. The real difference shows up once you add AI, which is where most of the 2026 price changes happened. This comparison uses current published pricing, shows what a real team would pay, and ends with a simple way to choose.
The short answer
- Choose Freshdesk if you're a small team watching costs, want to start free, or plan to use AI heavily. Its AI add-ons cost noticeably less.
- Choose Zendesk if you need a large ecosystem of integrations, advanced workflows across many teams, or you're already using other Zendesk products.
- For most businesses under 10 agents, Freshdesk is the lower-cost place to start. Zendesk makes more sense as support gets complex.
Pricing side by side
Prices below are per agent, per month, billed annually. Monthly billing costs more: about 17–21% extra on Freshdesk and 25–32% extra on Zendesk.
| Level | Freshdesk | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Free option | Free for up to 2 agents for 6 months (ticketing only) | No free plan; 14-day free trial |
| Entry plan | Growth: $19 | Support Team: $19 ($25 monthly) |
| Mid plan | Pro: $55 | Suite Team: $55 ($69 monthly) |
| Upper plan | Enterprise: $89 | Suite Professional: $115 ($149 monthly) |
| Top plan | – | Suite Enterprise: custom quote |
| Omnichannel version | Freshdesk Omni: $29 / $79 / $119 | Messaging, help center and more are included in Suite plans |
What changed in 2026: Freshdesk raised prices for the first time in about five years. Growth went from $15 to $19, Pro from $49 to $55, and Enterprise from $79 to $89. That closed most of the gap with Zendesk at the entry and mid levels.
AI costs: where the real difference is
Both platforms now sell AI in two ways: an assistant that helps your agents write and summarize replies, and an AI agent that answers customers on its own.
| AI feature | Freshdesk (Freddy AI) | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Agent assistant (Copilot) | $29/agent/month (annual), Pro or Enterprise only | $50/agent/month (annual) |
| AI agent answering customers | 500 sessions included per account, then $49 per 100 sessions (about $0.49 each); unused sessions don't roll over | A small allowance of automated resolutions per agent, then pay per resolution; third-party reports put it around $1.50–$2.00 each (Zendesk doesn't publish the overage rate) |
Note the different units. Freshdesk counts sessions (conversations with the AI agent). Zendesk counts automated resolutions (conversations solved with no human involved). They aren't identical, but for a business that expects the AI to handle hundreds of questions a month, Freshdesk's pricing is usually easier to predict.
What a real team pays
Here's the monthly cost, billed annually, for the most common setup: the mid-level plan plus the AI agent assistant for every agent. It doesn't include AI agent usage beyond the included amounts.
| Team size | Freshdesk Pro + Copilot ($55 + $29 = $84/agent) | Zendesk Suite Team + Copilot ($55 + $50 = $105/agent) | Difference per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 agents | $252/month | $315/month | $756 |
| 5 agents | $420/month | $525/month | $1,260 |
| 10 agents | $840/month | $1,050/month | $2,520 |
Without AI, the two are the same price at the entry and mid levels. With the agent assistant, Freshdesk costs about 20% less. At the upper level (Freshdesk Enterprise at $89 vs. Zendesk Suite Professional at $115), Freshdesk is about 23% cheaper before add-ons.
Both vendors also sell other paid add-ons. Zendesk lists quality assurance ($35/agent), workforce management ($25/agent) and advanced data privacy ($50/agent), among others. Third-party reviews of both platforms say teams often end up paying two to three times the headline price once add-ons and AI usage are included, so price out the full setup you need before you sign.

How to choose in 5 questions
- How many agents do you have? Under 10, cost usually decides, and Freshdesk wins. Over 25 with complex routing, look hard at Zendesk.
- Will you use AI? If yes, compare the AI prices, not just the plan prices. That's where the gap is.
- Which tools must it connect to? List your CRM, e-commerce platform and phone system, and confirm each integration exists before you buy.
- Do you want to try it free first? Freshdesk has a free option for up to 2 agents for 6 months; Zendesk offers a 14-day trial.
- Can you commit to a year? Paying yearly saves roughly 15–24%, depending on the platform and plan.
The part most comparisons skip
A help desk handles the customers you already have. It doesn't bring new ones. For a small business, the bigger return often comes from the other end: making sure people find you on Google, Maps and AI search in the first place, and that happy customers leave reviews.
