Executive summary: search didn't die, the click did

Every major search engine now answers the question before the searcher reaches your website. Google has AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing has Copilot, Yahoo has Scout and DuckDuckGo has Search Assist. For a business, that changes the goal. Ranking first is no longer the finish line. Being named or cited inside the AI answer is.

68%of US Google searches ended with no click (early 2026)
83%zero-click rate when an AI Overview appears
93%zero-click rate inside Google AI Mode
~60%drop in organic CTR when an AI Overview shows
+42%better conversion from AI-referred retail visits (Adobe, Mar 2026)

The good news: those AI answers are built from just two search indexes, Google's and Bing's. Optimize for both and you are visible on all four engines and their AI layers. Our own research shows why that matters locally: in the California AI Visibility Index, ChatGPT and Perplexity agreed on only 24% of local business recommendations, and our Bakersfield AI crawler study found 1 in 14 local websites blocking AI crawlers, making themselves invisible to AI answers.

This guide compares Google, Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo side by side, then gives you a step-by-step roadmap, the KPIs to track and 30 straight answers. For the wider marketing picture, see our guide to digital marketing in the AI era.

Google: biggest reach, biggest click squeeze

  • AI Overviews show on roughly 20–25%+ of searches; AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026.
  • Click-throughs fall hardest on informational queries. Branded, local and shopping searches are far less affected.
  • Being cited still pays: cited brands saw 15.74% paid CTR vs 11.19% when not cited.

Bing: the hidden engine behind several AI assistants

  • Record share (about 10% US), concentrated on desktop: ~10.5% of desktop search vs ~0.6% on mobile.
  • Its index grounds Copilot, Yahoo and much of DuckDuckGo.
  • The only engine that shows you exact AI citations, cited pages and Citation Share against competitors.

Yahoo: Bing results with a new AI front door

  • No index of its own; results come from Bing.
  • Yahoo Scout (beta, January 2026) runs on Anthropic's Claude and leans on Yahoo News, Finance and expert reviews.

DuckDuckGo: small, private, high-intent

  • ~1.84% of US search; users choose how often AI answers appear.
  • Search Assist cites one or two sources and uses a separate crawler, DuckAssistBot, which you can allow or block on its own.

Step-by-step execution roadmap

Weeks 1–2

Foundation

  1. Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; submit your XML sitemap to both.
  2. Audit robots.txt: allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and DuckAssistBot.
  3. Turn on IndexNow so Bing, and the engines it feeds, see changes in hours.
  4. Publish an llms.txt file that sums up your business, services and pricing.
Weeks 3–6

Answer-ready content

  1. Put a 40–60 word direct answer under every question-style heading.
  2. Build comparison pages with real HTML tables, the format Copilot cites most.
  3. Add schema: Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Article and Review.
  4. Publish original data. AI engines favor facts they can't find anywhere else.
Weeks 4–12

Off-site authority

  1. Make name, address and phone identical on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and Clutch.
  2. Ask real customers for reviews every month. Never buy or incentivize them.
  3. Pitch local press and the authors of “best of” lists, the sources AI answers quote.
Ongoing

Paid & measure

  1. Run Google Ads for reach and Microsoft Ads for Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo desktop traffic.
  2. Each month, ask 5–10 buyer questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot (logged out) and log who gets named.
  3. Review the KPIs below and shift budget toward what converts.

Pro tips and common pitfalls

3 fast wins

  1. Claim Bing Webmaster Tools today. Fifteen minutes gets you AI citation data for Bing, Copilot, Yahoo and part of DuckDuckGo. Most competitors still haven't done it.
  2. Turn one key service page into a comparison table. Tables are Copilot's most-cited format, and one strong page can earn most of your citations.
  3. Fix name, address and phone consistency. One mismatched listing makes AI engines unsure you are the same business.

3 mistakes to avoid

  1. Optimizing for Google only. You ignore about 13% of US searches (Bing + Yahoo) and the index behind Copilot and Yahoo Scout.
  2. Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Security plugins and CDN defaults can block AI bots. If they can't read you, they can't cite you.
  3. Judging success by traffic alone. With 68–93% of searches ending without a click, track citations, share of voice and conversions, not just sessions.

30 questions about search engines in the AI era

Big picture

1. Which search engine matters most in 2026?
Google, by a wide margin: about 90% of searches worldwide and 84% in the US (StatCounter, March 2026). But “most” is not “only”. Bing and the engines it powers still reach roughly 1 in 8 US searches.
2. Is Google losing market share?
Slowly. Google dipped below 90% worldwide in 2025 after years above it (it held 92.58% in 2022). In the US it sits around 84%. The bigger shift is not share, it is how many Google searches now end inside an AI answer.
3. Which search engine is gaining?
Bing. It is at its highest share ever, roughly 4.9% worldwide and 9.7–10.5% in the US in 2026, growth that tracks Microsoft's Copilot rollout.
4. Do market-share numbers include ChatGPT or Perplexity?
No. StatCounter measures referrals from search engines only. AI assistants are a separate channel and are not in those percentages.
5. How big is AI search compared with classic search?
Big and growing, but additive. ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly users in early 2026, yet about 95% of ChatGPT users still use Google (Similarweb). Plan for both, not one instead of the other.
6. What is the single biggest change for marketers?
Zero-click search. Since AI Overviews launched, search impressions are up about 49% while click-throughs are down about 30%. More people see you; fewer visit.

Google

7. What are Google AI Overviews?
AI-written summaries at the top of Google results, appearing on roughly 20–25%+ of searches and reaching more than 2.5 billion monthly users, per Google.
8. What is Google AI Mode?
Google's conversational search tab. It passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, and its queries average about three times the length of a classic search.
9. How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
A lot. Users click a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appears, versus 15% without one, and only about 1% click a source link inside the summary itself. Reported organic CTR falls roughly 60% when an Overview shows.
10. Which queries are least affected by AI Overviews?
Branded searches (about 0.09% trigger an Overview), shopping (about 3.2%), local and high-intent “buy now” searches. Informational and science questions trigger them most (about 43.6%), based on 2025 data.
11. Is it worth being cited inside an AI Overview?
Yes. Brands cited in AI Overviews earned a 15.74% paid click-through rate on the same queries, versus 11.19% when not cited (Seer Interactive, 2026). Being named lifts the clicks you still get.
12. Can I measure my AI Overview visibility?
Yes. Since June 3, 2026, Google Search Console has a Generative AI report showing how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. It shows impressions only; clicks still blend into normal organic data.
13. Is Google Ads still worth it with AI answers?
Yes. Google's Search revenue grew 19% year over year to $60.4 billion in Q1 2026, and ads are being placed in and around AI answers. Paid search remains the fastest way to guarantee visibility on high-intent searches.

Bing

14. Why care about an engine with about 10% share?
Because Bing's index also feeds Microsoft Copilot, Yahoo and part of DuckDuckGo. One set of Bing optimizations shows up on several engines and AI assistants at once.
15. Where is Bing strongest?
On desktop. Bing has about 10.5% of desktop search but only around 0.6% on mobile, thanks to Windows and Edge defaults. That makes it valuable for office workers and B2B buyers.
16. What is Copilot search?
AI-generated answers at the top of Bing results (expanded in November 2025) plus the standalone Microsoft Copilot assistant. Both pull their sources from Bing's index.
17. Can I see when Copilot cites my site?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools launched an AI Performance report on February 10, 2026, showing citations, cited pages and the “grounding queries” Copilot used. On June 16, 2026 it added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare views.
18. What kind of content does Copilot cite most?
Comparison and “best of” pages with real HTML tables. In one published case, a single comparison page captured 69% of a site's roughly 19,700 Copilot citations.
19. Is Microsoft Advertising worth running?
Usually, especially for B2B and older or desktop-heavy audiences. One Microsoft Ads campaign serves ads across Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo inventory, often at lower cost per click than Google.

Yahoo

20. Does Yahoo have its own search index?
No. Yahoo's web results are powered by Bing through a long-standing partnership. If you rank on Bing, you are largely ranking on Yahoo.
21. What is Yahoo Scout?
Yahoo's AI answer engine, launched in beta in January 2026. It runs on Anthropic's Claude model, blends web results with Yahoo's own content, and can reach about 250 million US users.
22. Who still uses Yahoo search?
Mostly people already inside Yahoo Mail, Finance and News. Yahoo holds 2.86% of US search, about twice its global share, and skews toward older, finance-minded audiences.
23. How do I show up on Yahoo in the AI era?
Rank on Bing, run Microsoft Ads, and earn coverage on news and review sites, since Scout summarizes expert reviews and pulls from Yahoo's news and finance content.

DuckDuckGo

24. Is DuckDuckGo worth optimizing for?
As a secondary channel, yes. At about 1.84% of US search it is small, but its users are privacy-minded and tech-savvy, a valuable audience for SaaS, finance, legal and health businesses.
25. Does DuckDuckGo use AI?
Yes, optionally. Search Assist writes short AI answers that link to one or two sources, and Duck.ai offers anonymous chat with models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others. Users choose how often AI answers appear; on “Often” they show on more than 20% of searches.
26. How do I get cited by DuckDuckGo Search Assist?
Allow DuckAssistBot in your robots.txt, rank well on Bing (DuckDuckGo blends Bing's index with its own crawlers), and put a clear two-sentence answer near the top of each page.

Strategy

27. What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO gets you ranked in the list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) get you named or cited inside the AI answer. In 2026 you need both, and the second is built on the first.
28. What actually gets a business named by AI search?
Mostly third-party proof: reviews, directories like Clutch and Yelp, local press and “best of” lists, backed by clear, structured facts on your own site. AI engines repeat what trusted sources say about you.
29. Do all AI engines recommend the same businesses?
No. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode agreed on the same brand for only 17% of shopping queries. In our own California AI Visibility Index, ChatGPT and Perplexity agreed on just 24% of local recommendations. Track each engine separately.
30. What is the one thing to do this month?
Verify your site in both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and open their AI reports. Together they show your visibility across Google, Bing, Yahoo, Copilot and part of DuckDuckGo, free.
